Lab-Informed Psychiatric Care

Laboratory testing may be used as a psychiatric decision-making tool to evaluate possible contributors to mood, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disturbance, cognition, libido, motivation, and nervous system regulation.

Why Labs May Matter for Mental Health Symptoms

Some patients feel tired, foggy, unmotivated, anxious, or not like themselves even when a standard visit focuses only on medication. Labs can help identify patterns that may contribute to symptoms. They do not replace medical diagnosis or specialty care.

Common Symptoms We May Review

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Brain fog
  • Low motivation
  • Poor sleep
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Libido concerns
  • Concentration problems

Common Lab Categories

When clinically appropriate, labs may include:

  • Thyroid markers
  • Vitamin D
  • B12 and folate
  • Magnesium
  • Iron and ferritin
  • Metabolic markers such as glucose, A1c, insulin, and lipids
  • CBC and CMP for safety monitoring
  • Hormone patterns when clinically relevant

How We Use Labs

  • To better understand possible physiologic contributors to mental health symptoms.
  • To inform individualized psychiatric treatment planning.
  • To monitor response and safety during treatment.
  • To identify when referral to primary care or a specialist may be appropriate.

What Labs Can and Cannot Tell Us

Labs can help identify patterns that may contribute to mental health symptoms and guide psychiatric treatment planning. They do not diagnose medical disease on their own and do not replace evaluation by primary care or specialty providers.

When Referral May Be Needed

If lab results suggest a condition that requires primary care, endocrinology, cardiology, or other specialty follow-up, we discuss next steps and coordinate referrals when appropriate.

What Lab-Informed Care Is and Is Not

Lab-informed psychiatric care is part of a broader plan that may include medication management, therapy-informed care, lifestyle support, and off-label hormone-informed support. It is not a replacement for primary care, endocrinology, gynecology, urology, cardiology, pediatrics, or other specialty medical evaluation.

Important Note

Laboratory testing at Meadowlark Mind & Body is used as a psychiatric decision-making tool. Labs help identify patterns that may contribute to mental health symptoms but do not replace primary care, emergency care, endocrinology, cardiology, gynecology, urology, pediatrics, or other specialty medical evaluation. Patients are encouraged to maintain routine care with their primary care provider and appropriate specialists.
